The WISE Olympics took place on 12 July 2024 at Gateshead Stadium.
We were thrilled to bring together pupils from across our 12 participating WISE Academies schools for a momentous event filled with friendly competition, school pride, and unforgettable memories.
Memorable Moments Take Centre Stage
The WISE Olympics is part of our exciting “Memorable Moments” program, fostering connections and collaboration between our schools. This fun-filled day allows pupils of all ages and abilities to showcase their talents, celebrate their school spirit, and feel the joy of being part of the WISE Trust.
From Heats to Cheers: Building Up to the Big Day
The journey to the WISE Olympics began within each school. Pupils participated in qualifying heats and in-school competitions. The top performers and teams then proudly represented their schools at the grand event.
Adding another layer of spirit to the event, each participating school designed their own flag based on the Olympic values. These beautiful flags, bursting with creativity and school pride, were displayed proudly during the opening ceremony.
Celebrating Excellence, Respect, and Friendship
The WISE Olympics embodies the very spirit of the Olympics itself. We celebrate:
- Excellence: Encouraging pupils to strive for their personal best and push their boundaries.
- Respect: Fostering respect for oneself, fellow competitors, the rules of the game, and the entire WISE community.
- Friendship: Building bridges between schools and creating lasting bonds through the joy of competition and shared experiences.
The Main Event
Our youngest pupils participated in a carousel of exciting activities within the stadium’s Sports Hall.
Meanwhile, our older pupils put their athleticism to the test in thrilling track and field events – long jump, high jump, sprints, and a throwing competition.
WISE Olympics organiser, and School Headteacher, Julie Phazey recalled from the event:
“We have had a great time organising a whole Trust Olympic event. We had a brilliant working party with staff from across the academies who all contributed to the planning and running of the event. From ordering medals and certificates, to visiting the stadium to organising and planning the day itself – everyone was fantastic!
The event itself replicated a real Olympics. There were events designed for all ages with our children competing in throwing, running and jumping events. The camaraderie between schools was wonderful to see and we couldn’t be prouder of how they represented their individual schools. One child went back to school and said that it had been the best day of his life!
We think that this event will be remembered for years to come and fits in with our Childhood Pledge promise to provide memorable moments for our children.”
The Finish Line and Beyond
After a day filled with exhilarating challenges and triumphs, we returned to our respective schools for a special medal ceremony, where our champions were rightfully recognised for their achievements.
The WISE Olympics was a day of laughter, cheers, and unforgettable memories.
